How to donate stocks and bonds
By making a direct gift of your appreciated securities, you can avoid paying the capital gains taxes that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets. Please contact our office to designate where the gift should be applied once it arrives.
Donating a portion of a retirement account
A QCD allows individuals who are 70 ½ years old or older to donate up to $111,000 total annually to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions. Gifts must be made directly from the IRA plan administrator to qualify. Download our QCD Fact Sheet for more details on this type of contribution.
Donating through your will or trust
We offer many opportunities to help you recognize special people who have made a difference in your life and in the life of the community. We accept donations made as a tribute or memorial to an individual, family or organization. Special funds can also be created to handle specific tributes and memorials. Accepting contributions to a memorial fund allows families to take their time in determining how they would like to honor their loved one while the funds are held at the foundation. Find a memorial fund by visiting our giving portal.
How to donate real estate
For donors interested in donating real estate, we first confirm that Black River Falls Area Foundation can accept the property. Once confirmed, we sell the property and use the money to create or add to a charitable fund at Black River Falls Area Foundation. The fund makes distributions to the organizations or charitable causes you recommend.
Giving real estate may be appropriate if...
- You own residential, commercial, industrial or undeveloped real estate you no longer use or want to maintain
- The property can be readily sold after gifting
- The property is environmentally clean and free from mortgage debt or other liabilities
Real estate must have a reasonable expectation of being sold within approximately a year and must not jeopardize Black River Falls Area Foundation’s nonprofit status or
expose it to expenses. We will work with you and your advisors to assess the feasibility of any property gifts you are considering, now or through your estate plan.
A gift of real estate you have owned for more than one year may entitle you to a tax deduction for the property’s full fair market value while allowing you to avoid capital
gains tax.
Donating life insurance policy proceeds
You can donate your life insurance by transferring ownership of your policy allowing for a tax deduction now. The Black River Falls Area Foundation may be listed as the beneficiary to a life insurance policy.
